More About Minerva Teichert
Minerva Teichert was a remarkably talented artist whose paintings ranged in subject from western American scenes and pioneers to Native American Life, and a huge variety of religious topics. Many of her works depicted the history of the Latter-Day Saints pioneers and their journey to and experiences in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints commissioned many paintings from Minerva throughout her career, including many murals and scenes from the Book of Mormon.
Minerva Kohlepp (Teichert) was born in 1888 and was the second of ten children. Her family lived in Ogden, Utah and moved to a ranch in Idaho. Minerva was no stranger to hard work on the farm/ranch. At age 14 she traveled to San Francisco as a nanny for an Idaho family. While there, Minerva visited an art museum for the first time in her life. She was so inspired, she decided to take art classes and spent the next 15 years earning money to pay for, and attending various art schools; including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York.
In 1917, at the age of 29, Minerva Kohlepp returned home to Idaho to marry Herman Teichert. Unfortunately, the year after their wedding, World War One broke out and Herman left to serve in the United States Military. Minerva was left with their newborn son, but luckily, Herman returned after the war and the couple went on to add four more children to their family. Minerva and Herman spent the rest of their lives together in Cokeville, Wyoming raising their family and working their ranch. They cultivated a life deeply connected to the land and God. Minerva used Wyoming as a source of inspiration for her paintings, depicting the wild landscape, Native American life and pioneer trails.
Minerva was bestowed many honors as the first woman commissioned to paint artwork for various corporate and government institutions. She also won first prize in the LDS Church’s centennial art contest and became the first woman ever invited to paint an LDS Temple mural. Minerva’s distinctive style shines through her paintings, reflecting her profound spiritual insights and her poignant connection to her faith. Minerva Teichert’s works can often be found by searching for LDS art, LDS church pictures, and Mormon art; although these are not official names of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her art encapsulates the spirit of a life dedicated to the craft of painting and the tapestry of her faith.
